This Comic Zine is stories told by grassroots Trans Women in a Theatre of the Oppressed workshop.
On March 2023, I was hired to document and then produce a zine on a Theatre of the Oppressed workshop with grassroots Trans Activists of Bengal, organised by BDS Samabhabona.
There was one caveat. A few participants did not want to have either their photos or videos published. It was then decided to go with a comic version, as the process of turning the photos into halftone versions would obscure the faces enough.
Goal
We wanted something that the participants felt reflected their experience truthfully.
The content of the zine was decided in a participatory manner. The stories depicted are taken from the workshop itself. The participants created these plays from their own lived experiences. The content and design took eighteen months to produce between me and Ayesha.
The content and the design were produced in Bengali first, and later translated into English. The printed version was subsequently distributed among participants and other Trans individuals free of cost.
Result
The Participants loved the book, So did TO Practitioners.
Few veteran Theatre of the Oppressed facilitators found that the comic accurately represented the format of a forum theatre a lot more intuitively than other examples.
